Abstract

The average life of expectancy of Korean people is increasing so fast, and it is expected that the population of the elderly
people will be 25% in 2030. It means that the elderly patients to come to the dental office will be also increased and for
the operative treatment of them, dentists should consider some special considerations. First, the general medical condition of the patients should be considered. The most popular problems are arthritis, head and neck cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, mental problem, osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease and stroke. For each disease, dentists need medical consultation for the physician if there is any suspicious for the condition of the patients. Second, Crack tooth syndrome will be popular for the elderly patients and dentists should be cautious for the diagnosis of it. Third, non-carious cervical lesion will be popular and the severity can be increased as aging. The surface of this lesion is sclerotic thus it is more difficult to obtain good bonding quality to keep the restoration. Finally, the pattern of the caries was changed because of the aging of the tooth and periodontal change, and glass ionomer is the material of choice for this treatment. For the treatment of the elderly people, we have to consider these factors and modified the treatment plan and procedure to customize the patients need.
